Azoxystrobin is a systemic fungicide, active against Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Deuteromycetes and Oomycetes. It has preventative, curative and translaminar properties and residual activity lasting for up to eight weeks on cereals. The product demonstrates slow, steady foliar uptake and moves only in the xylem. Azoxystrobin inhibits mycelial growth and also has anti-sporulant activity. It is particularly effective at the early stages of fungal development (especially at spore germination) due to its inhibition of energy production. The product is classified as a Group K fungicide. Azoxystrobin is part of a class of chemicals known as ß-methoxyacrylates, which are derived from the naturally-occurring compounds and are used mostly in agricultural settings. At this time, Azoxystrobin is the only fungicide with the ability to offer protection against the four major types of plant fungi. Azoxystrobin was first discovered in the midst of research being conducted on fungal mushrooms commonly found in the forests of Europe. These small mushrooms fascinated scientists due to their strong ability to defend themselves. It was found that the defense mechanism of the mushrooms were based on the secretion of two substances, strobilurin A and oudemansin A. These substances gave the fungi the ability to keep their competitors at bay and kill them when in range. Observations of this mechanism led to research that resulted in the development of Azoxystrobin fungicide. Azoxystrobin is mostly used on agricultural sites and for commercial use. There are some products containing Azoxystrobin that are restricted use or they are not recommended for residential use so you will need to check the labeling to make sure. Azoxystrobin has a low aqueous solubility, is non-volatile and may leach to groundwater under certain conditions. It may be persistent in soil and can also be persistent in water systems if conditions are right. It has a low mammalian toxicity but may bioaccumulate. It is a skin and eye irritant. It is moderately toxic to birds, most aquatic life, honeybees and earthworms.
